Discover Primary Science Award!

For the third year in succession, Coachford National School has obtained The Award for Science and Maths Excellence. This year we were honoured to have Dr Gordon Lightbody,  lecturer in Electrical Engineering from University College Cork, to present the children with their certificates. Dr Lightbody spoke about his own research in the area of renewable energy. He also told the children how he and his team are working with doctors in helping to improve the lives of very young babies. Earlier in the year, Dr Mary Barry-Murphy visited 5th and 6th class to tell about her work as an Environmental Scientist in Cork City Council. She told the children all about the planning that went into the new “Food Only”  waste collection that will be implemented soon in Cork City.  Both visitors encouraged the children to think of themselves as scientists and hopefully some children will pursue science as their careers in the future. We would like to say thank you to Dr Lightbody and Dr Barry-Murphy and  to teachers Mr Dennehy, Ms Dunlea and Ms O’Driscoll for helping the children achieve this award.
